Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has criticized US Vice President JD Vance’s remarks on Greenland, calling them undiplomatic and inappropriate for an ally. Vance accused Copenhagen of underinvesting in Greenland, during an uninvited visit to the strategically significant Arctic island.
The trip, viewed as a provocation by Danish and Greenlandic officials, comes amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing interest in acquiring Greenland for US security interests. Trump has refused to rule out the use of force, though Vance insists a diplomatic deal is possible.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected Vance’s claims and condemned the visit as “unacceptable pressure.” Backed by the EU, Danish and Greenlandic officials maintain that Greenland is not for sale.
With Greenland’s new government emphasizing unity against external pressure, opposition to US annexation remains strong. A January poll confirmed that most Greenlanders reject joining the United States, despite their shared goal of eventual independence from Denmark.
