Kaja Kallas stated that the European Union is considering expanding its naval mission in the Red Sea to also include the Strait of Hormuz following the end of the conflict with Iran.
After a meeting of EU defense ministers, Kallas said that Operation Aspides is already playing an important role in protecting maritime shipping in the Red Sea.
“Operation Aspides is already making an important contribution to safeguarding maritime transport in the Red Sea, but its activities could also be expanded into the strait,” she said.
According to Kallas, several EU member states have pledged to contribute additional naval vessels to the mission, which could support a potential expansion of the operation into the Strait of Hormuz.
