A powerful earthquake off the coast of Northern California has triggered a tsunami warning for millions of Americans.
Foreign media reports that the San Francisco Bay area was told to expect large waves. Residents were advised to “move inland” before the waves hit.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.0, struck on Thursday morning about 50 miles off the coast of California. A smaller aftershock was felt shortly afterward.
The National Weather Service canceled the tsunami warning for coastal areas of California and Oregon.
“For now, there is no tsunami threat for this area,” said the agency.
However, at least 5.3 million people in California were under a tsunami warning following the earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of them experienced the intense shaking from the strong earthquake, which was followed by smaller aftershocks, though fortunately, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.
