French President Emmanuel Macron called for courage and stability during the first Cabinet meeting held by the new government of François Bayrou.
As is tradition at the start of the new year, the ministers first gathered at the Ministry of the Interior for a breakfast meeting.
Afterward, the 35 ministers walked in narrow rows to join Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.
“This government was born out of the turmoil of a major political crisis. You know the picture: censure, the collapse of the majority, the rise of extremes,” said government spokesperson Sophie Primas in a press conference.
She urged “everyone” to “shoulder their responsibilities” and “move away from rigid positions” in favor of “seeking” and “going beyond” rather than “obstructing.”
Emmanuel Macron appointed François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister on December 13, 2024, tasking him with forming a new government. The composition of the government was announced on December 23, 2024.
The previous government under Michel Barnier was ousted on December 4 following the approval of a motion of censure in the National Assembly.
