Hundreds of thousands of Turkish citizens gathered in Istanbul today to protest the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu, Gazeta Sinjali reports.

In a social media post, Imamoğlu expressed his support for the protesters and his belief in the people’s victory against injustice.

“My beloved nation, never lose hope. A handful of people who lack a sense of justice and law will lose—our nation will win. Millions defended their will today. Thank you, Istanbul,” he wrote.

Imamoğlu was arrested on charges of corruption, an accusation that many in Turkey see as politically motivated, given his status as the main rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

His arrest has sparked mass protests across Istanbul, with many viewing it as an attempt to suppress political opposition ahead of future elections.
