The Israeli military has launched a targeted ground operation in Gaza, reclaiming a strategic area just a day after airstrikes shattered a two-month ceasefire with Hamas.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated on Wednesday that its troops expanded their control over central and southern Gaza, aiming to create a buffer zone between northern and southern Gaza.

Escalation After Ceasefire Breakdown

Israel resumed airstrikes on Tuesday, accusing Hamas of refusing to release hostages and rejecting mediation efforts. Hamas, however, blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for unilaterally violating the ceasefire, putting hostages at risk.

Palestinian authorities reported at least 70 casualties on Wednesday, including 50 in northern and central Gaza and 20 in Rafah and Khan Younis. A deadly airstrike in Beit Lahia reportedly killed 24 people attending a funeral, while another attack in Gaza City’s Al-Sabra neighborhood claimed 21 lives, including six children.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening, with Israel’s blockade on aid deliveries now in its third week. Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for Gaza’s Civil Defense, warned:

“We are on the brink of famine, threatening Gaza’s population.”

The latest escalation marks a return to Netanyahu’s military pressure strategy aimed at forcing Hamas to release more hostages. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that Gaza’s residents “will pay the full price” if hostages are not freed and Hamas remains in control.

With 251 hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, 2023, only eight have been rescued alive by Israeli forces so far, while the majority were released through prisoner exchange deals during previous ceasefire agreements.
