Italian President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the critical role of KFOR in Kosovo, warning of a high risk of external interventions in the Western Balkans without the peacekeeping mission.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella has warned of a significant risk of external interventions in the Western Balkans, particularly in Kosovo, stressing that the KFOR mission has been crucial to maintaining peace in the region.
During a conversation with the Italian KFOR command mission, Mattarella highlighted the immense challenge posed by the local climate, which he believes intentionally complicates the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade.
“For 25 years, KFOR has been dedicated to this mission. I have paid close attention and noticed that the local climate is sometimes deliberately heated, making the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina difficult,” said Mattarella, according to Ansa. “Your mission to keep this dialogue alive is critical. The risk of external interventions in the Balkans is extraordinarily high.”
Mattarella further emphasized that without KFOR, violent outbreaks would have erupted, leading to the destruction of Kosovo over the years.
