Prime Minister Albin Kurti of Kosovo recently took to Facebook to commemorate the tragic events of April 21, 1999, when 11 Albanian men were tortured and thrown alive into a pit in the village of Dragash in Theranda. The victims ranged in age from 49 to 91 years old.
According to Kurti’s post, Serbian armed forces subjected these civilians to torture before callously disposing of them in a pit filled with construction debris. Their bodies were discovered after the war, coincidentally, when the pit’s owner began clearing it out.
This horrific incident serves as yet another testament to the deep-seated hatred and systematic planning by Serbian police and military to commit atrocities against Albanians and conceal them. Their primary concern was to erase all evidence of their crimes, including the disposal of bodies through burial, burning, abduction of corpses, and other grotesque methods.
Today, we honor the martyrs of Dragash, remembering their sacrifice and the enduring pain endured by our people in the pursuit of the freedom we now enjoy.
