Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has stated that the Republic of Kosovo does not accept EU membership to be conditioned on the establishment of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities.
Prime Minister Kurti considered absurd the request for the draft statute of the Association to be sent to the Constitutional Court, lamenting the lack of support “from democratic states”.
“Kosovo progresses year by year in democracy index, human rights… assessed by independent international institutions. We have an advanced legal system for communities. After all this progress in recent weeks, we faced a new condition unrelated to membership standards. We heard that now they are conditioning finalization with the submission of the document to the Constitutional Court.
“The Government of Kosovo cannot send an unaccepted draft; this request from us has been and will remain absurd. Three times during the process, attempts have been made to make this issue part of the vote. We thought the obstacles to membership in that organization came from states that have not accepted Kosovo, but never from states that are our allies. The government does not accept conditioning for membership in the EU with the association,” Kurti said on Wednesday at the Government meeting, regretting the lack of support from allied states.
