The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has announced the start of modernization works at the Kosova B Power Plant, a project aimed at extending its operational life by another 20 years.

Kurti emphasized that the €56.5 million investment, funded by the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK), will reduce pollution and significantly enhance energy supply security for the coming decade.

He added that once the upgrades to units B1 and B2 are completed, energy imports will decrease by at least €23 million annually, while exports are expected to rise by €20 million each year. The modernization will also substantially lower emissions of dust and nitrogen oxides, making the plant more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Here is his full statement:

“The modernization works at the Kosova B Power Plant have begun. Once all the work on units B1 and B2 is completed, the plant’s lifespan will be extended by 20 years. Pollution from dust and nitrogen oxides will be significantly reduced, and major overhauls will only need to be carried out once every 10 years instead of every five.

With this €56.5 million investment — self-financed by the Kosovo Energy Corporation — annual energy production will increase by 600 GWh, dramatically improving supply security for the next 20 years. Energy imports will be reduced by at least €23 million, while exports will increase by at least €20 million annually.

Congratulations to the KEK management and workers — wishing you success with the works ahead.”
