The leader of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, has invited the leaders of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) to a meeting on May 1 regarding the establishment of new institutions, specifically the election of the Speaker of the Assembly.

Kurti has scheduled the meeting with both leaders for Thursday at 08:30 AM.

This invitation comes after six failed attempts by Kurti’s party to elect Albulena Haxhiu as Speaker of the Assembly.

“Based on the Constitution, the three deputy speakers will come from the three parties that won the most seats. Therefore, I invite you to a joint meeting with Mr. Memli Krasniqi, leader of the PDK, in room N-204 of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, tomorrow (Thursday), May 1, 2025, at 08:30,” Kurti wrote.

He expressed hope for a positive response, concluding the letter with a warm greeting.

“With hope for a positive response, I send you my regards,” Kurti added.

It should be noted that the constitutive session of the Assembly — which began on April 15 — has failed eight consecutive times, as Vetëvendosje has been unable to secure the necessary 61 votes for its nominee, Albulena Haxhiu.

Only after the Assembly is constituted can the path to forming a new Government begin.

Vetëvendosje holds 48 out of the 120 seats in the Assembly. So far, Haxhiu has secured a maximum of 57 votes.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) view Haxhiu as a “divisive figure,” while the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has stated it will not vote for any candidate from the winning party.

Vetëvendosje insists that Haxhiu is a deserving candidate and, despite calls for a political agreement, has rejected the possibility of nominating anyone else.

Vetëvendosje won the February 9 elections with approximately 42 percent of the vote, or 48 seats.

PDK came second with 24 seats, followed by LDK with 20.

AAK and Nisma won eight seats combined, three of which belong to Nisma.

The European Union recently stated that Kosovo must swiftly form its new institutions.
