Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has welcomed the ceasefire agreement in a phone conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden.

In a statement released by Mikati, he noted that he had reviewed the terms of the agreement and viewed it as “a fundamental step towards restoring calm and stability in Lebanon, and the possibility of returning displaced persons to their cities.”

He further confirmed that the Lebanese government is committed to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Mikati then called on the international community “to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard,” as reported by the BBC.

Resolution 1701 ended the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel.
