Marko Abramović, a suspect in war crimes committed during the Kosovo War, was arrested in Montenegro on January 15, 2025.

Specifically, he is accused of being involved in the Meja Massacre that took place on April 27, 1999. The Meja Massacre was one of the most horrific events during the war, where Serbian military and police forces killed 377 ethnic Albanian civilians in the village of Meja, near Gjakova.

The incident occurred during the height of the conflict between Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian population and Serbian forces, which was part of a broader conflict that ultimately led to Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008. The Meja Massacre was one of the many atrocities attributed to the Serbian forces during the war, alongside other mass killings, forced displacements, and human rights violations.

Sources within Montenegrin authorities confirmed the arrest to Gazeta Insajderi.

Meanwhile, Kosovar authorities have initiated procedures for his extradition to Kosovo to face charges.

Marko Abramović’s arrest in Montenegro in January 2025 indicates that authorities are pursuing individuals involved in these crimes. Although much detail on Abramović’s role is not widely available, his arrest signifies ongoing efforts by authorities to hold accountable those responsible for atrocities during the Kosovo conflict. The arrest also highlights the continued legal and political tensions surrounding the events of the war, as many individuals involved in war crimes have faced legal action or been subject to international investigations.

The extradition process from Montenegro to Kosovo suggests that Abramović will likely face legal proceedings in Kosovo for his alleged role in the Meja Massacre, marking another step in seeking justice for victims of the conflict.
