Amid growing international security challenges, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a transformative approach to European defense, insisting that the European Union (EU) must evolve into a European Defense Union.

Speaking at a business summit sponsored by Süddeutsche Zeitung, Merz emphasized the need for Europe to take decisive action in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, shifting Euro-Atlantic relations, and an increasingly assertive China.

We can no longer rely on the United States to protect us, on China to supply us with raw materials, or on Russia to ultimately return to the path of peace. The world is changing, and Europe must respond,” Merz said.

He described the creation of a strong EU defense framework as essential for European self-reliance.

We face international challenges that we as Europeans must address together, with the ability to defend ourselves,” Merz added.

Merz also highlighted Germany’s central role within the EU, noting that as the largest economy and most populous country, Berlin has a greater responsibility to lead Europe.

We hold far greater responsibility than anyone else to assume leadership within this EU. But this remains an empty phrase unless it is filled with substance,” Merz stated.

Critics argue that while Merz’s remarks underscore the EU’s urgent need to strengthen defense capabilities, Europe remains heavily dependent on NATO and the US, highlighting a longstanding vulnerability in EU security policy. Analysts note that transforming the EU into a fully independent defense bloc will require significant political will, funding, and strategic coherence, which Brussels has historically struggled to achieve.
