Following Friedrich Merz’s failure in the first round of voting for chancellor in the Bundestag, Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), issued a sharp statement aimed at Germany’s political establishment.
Calling the result “a good day for Germany,” Weidel demanded Merz’s resignation and immediate new federal elections.
“Merz must step aside, and the path must be cleared for holding general elections,” she told reporters, emphasizing that the outcome reflects a turning point in public sentiment.
Her remarks come amid a period of political uncertainty in Germany, with the formation of a new government still unresolved.
