Venezuela has today released six American detainees, following negotiations led by Richard Grenell with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The six detainees expressed their gratitude to Trump after their release.

In footage shared on social media, they are seen speaking with Trump on the phone while aboard a plane heading to the United States.

“Thank you very much, President Trump,” one of the detainees said.

Another added, “Thank you so much, this is amazing, we can’t believe we’re here, flying above the clouds.”

Together, all the freed Americans said, “We love you, Trump.”

Earlier, the White House had urged Venezuela to release what they referred to as “American hostages” and to agree to take back Venezuelan criminals deported by the U.S., or face consequences.

At least nine people with U.S. citizenship are believed to be among the more than 2,200 people arrested by Venezuelan authorities following nationwide protests over the disputed results of the July 2024 elections, in which Nicolás Maduro claimed victory.

His reelection was widely rejected by the opposition and the international community, including the U.S. He was sworn in for his third term last month.

Trump praised the move in a special post, saying that Grenell was “bringing the six people home from Venezuela.”

Venezuelan state media reported that discussions with the President Trump’s envoy had been respectful, according to the BBC.
