Jasmin Mujanović, a political scientist specializing in Southeast European politics, has argued that Washington’s decision to restore closer relations with Serbia is a strategic mistake.
In an article published by Foreign Policy, Mujanović wrote that on July 17, the United States and Serbia jointly announced the launch of a Strategic Dialogue a formal and permanent framework for diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
He noted that the move is not unprecedented, as the United States maintains similar strategic dialogues with dozens of countries worldwide, including Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, and North Macedonia in the Western Balkans.
However, Mujanović argues that this decision raises serious concerns about the direction of U.S. foreign policy and its potential impact on the security and stability of an already fragile region.
He further describes the development as particularly troubling given Serbia’s growing alignment with China and what he characterizes as its leadership’s increasing embrace of an authoritarian model of governance.
