Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has called on Serbia’s incoming political leadership to clarify its positions on European integration, saying it remains unclear what policies the student-backed movement intends to pursue after its electoral victory.
Speaking at an enlargement summit on November 3, Plenković said he had closely followed the celebrations following the October 25 election and noted the absence of European Union flags during the Student List’s victory gathering.
“Honestly, I think nobody really knows many of the positions of Serbia’s new leadership. They were very clever in not saying too much before the elections, which I can understand tactically. But now, as they take responsibility, they have to explain what they stand for,” Plenković said.
He singled out the absence of EU flags during the election-night celebrations as a notable detail.
“What stood out to all observers was that there were no European flags at all during the election-night celebrations. Not one,” he said.
Plenković argued that the scene did not suggest the movement was a strongly pro-European political force.
“Listening to the comments of Serbian citizens, it seemed more like a movement for freedom, which deserves respect. But we need to examine in detail the substance of their European policy. I suppose we should give them some time,” the Croatian prime minister said.
His remarks come as Serbia prepares for a political transition following the Student List’s election victory. The incoming leadership now faces expectations to clarify its positions on European integration and the country’s future relationship with the European Union.
Plenković’s comments highlight questions among regional and European officials about the political direction of Serbia’s next government, particularly its approach to EU membership and relations with Brussels.
