Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, recently said that Poland is ready to host NATO’s nuclear weapons if required to strengthen the alliance’s eastern wing.
Otherwise, Poland has historically been sensitive to European wars and has dramatically increased its defense budget in response to Russian aggression.
But the willingness of the Poles to host nuclear weapons was not well received by the Russians, writes skynews.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Alexeyevich Ryabkov even stated that any NATO nuclear capability located in Poland would be targeted by Russian forces.
This proposal from NATO comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has threatened European security and raised concerns of a wider conflict.
Although modern nuclear weapon delivery systems do not need to be deployed close to their intended targets, their deployment sends a powerful political message.
The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has also sent one, with the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus in 2023.
Initially, this initiative was designed to prevent the West from increasing support for Ukraine.
However, according to analysts, Russia knows that if the West fully engages in the defense of Ukraine, it will not be able to achieve its strategic objectives.
