The Kosovo Police Union (SPK) has issued a strong condemnation of journalist Branislav Krstić, following what it calls deeply offensive and irresponsible statements denying the heroism of Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku, who was killed in the September 24, 2023 terrorist attack in Banjska.
“An Unacceptable Insult to a National Hero”
Krstić’s public remarks, aired recently in a domestic media outlet, have sparked outrage. The union called his claims a serious insult to the memory and sacrifice of Bunjaku, who was posthumously honored as a national hero.
“Denying the hero’s sacrifice is not only an affront to Afrim Bunjaku’s memory, but also a deep offense to the dignity of the Kosovo Police and the values of our society,” the statement reads.
Warning Against Conspiracy Narratives
The union also raised concerns over misinformation surrounding the case of Sergeant Muhamet Lika, who was murdered in Kaçanik. Attempts to involve Lika’s killing in conspiratorial narratives, according to SPK, risk obstructing justice and defaming both the officer and the institution he served with honor.
Media Ethics and Due Process
Another major issue addressed is the premature public exposure of police officers involved in ongoing investigations. SPK urges the media to refrain from publishing names and images before judicial processes conclude, stressing that if an officer is later found innocent, an equally prominent public correction must be issued.
A Call for Responsible Journalism
The union reaffirms its commitment to protecting the dignity and integrity of every police officer and calls for constructive engagement with professional and objective media outlets.
“We remain open to cooperation with all media that uphold the principles of professionalism and factual reporting,” the union concluded.
