Russia will end up defeated if it attacks NATO, but the military alliance must strengthen its defenses anyway, Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski told the country’s Parliament on Thursday.

Sikorski made these comments describing the new direction taken by Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Government. He explained to the world and his own country’s citizens that Poland’s priorities have changed since Tusk came to power in December.

He said that Poland wants to return to the group of countries that set the agenda of the European Union (EU).

Poland, a member of NATO and the EU, is located on the eastern flank of both and borders Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

It is an important route for supplying Ukraine with weapons from the West, in its war against Russia.

The Law and Justice party led Poland from 2015 to 2023, and – while maintaining relations with the US – it has taken a stand against the European Union, which it accuses of trying to strip power from individual countries, as well as with Germany, which invaded and occupied Poland during World War II.

The purpose of his speech was to show that Poland wants good relations with Washington and Brussels and that being a leader in the EU helps it to be the most valuable partner of the United States.

He also emphasized the importance of friendship with Germany and accused the previous Government of choosing confrontation.
