During their recent meeting in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his appreciation for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s decision to attend Victory Day celebrations, despite what he described as efforts to dissuade Vučić from making the trip.
The two leaders discussed bilateral trade and energy cooperation, with Vučić emphasizing that gas supply remains a matter of vital importance for Serbia.
“I sincerely thank you for the long-term gas agreement, which has very favorable conditions. We hope these terms can be maintained—or perhaps even improved, if I may dare to say so,” Vučić told Putin during their meeting at the Kremlin, according to Serbian media outlet N1.
President Putin acknowledged that current trade indicators between Serbia and Russia are not at an optimal level and noted a decline that needs to be reversed. He stressed that energy cooperation is the cornerstone of economic relations between the two nations.
“Energy is the key element of our economic cooperation. Russia continues to guarantee Serbia’s energy security, supplying around 85% of its gas needs. Deliveries are made through the Turkish Stream pipeline. Furthermore, Gazprom not only meets its contractual obligations but also provides additional volumes upon Serbia’s request, ensuring a stable economic foundation,” Putin said.
He also emphasized that Vučić’s presence in Moscow, despite logistical and political challenges, was highly valued by Russia.
In return, Vučić expressed gratitude for Russia’s support and highlighted President Putin’s “extraordinary contribution” to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
