Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States has been elected the 267th Pope, making history as the first American pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church, reports Rks News. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV and will lead over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
At 69 years old, Pope Leo XIV is globally recognized for his missionary work in South America and his leadership as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican. From 2014 to 2023, he served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru.
“I still consider myself a missionary. My calling, like every Christian’s, is to be a missionary — to proclaim the Gospel wherever we are,” Prevost told Vatican News in an interview following his election.
He is expected to continue the reformist path set by Pope Francis, focusing on greater inclusion and deeper engagement between the Church and its faithful around the globe.
