A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukrainian television channel We Are Ukraine in Kyiv while journalists were broadcasting live, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, as Russian strikes across the capital killed at least five people.
Zelensky described the daytime attack on the broadcaster as “a new page in Russian degradation,” while photographs released by the president showed a partially collapsed section of the building.
The strike hit the We Are Ukraine newsroom as journalists were working, according to the broadcaster. The channel later released footage it said captured the moment the drone struck its offices.
“The footage confirms that this was not an accidental strike, but a deliberate attack targeting journalists,” the channel said in a post on Telegram.
Zelensky condemned the attack as an assault on Ukraine’s media and journalists.
“Today, Russia carried out an attack on the media, on journalists,” he said, calling for Russia to be stopped through coordinated international efforts.
“At this point, it is possible only through joint efforts,” Zelensky added, renewing his appeal to Ukraine’s allies in Europe, the United States and elsewhere to increase pressure on Moscow.
At least five people were killed in Russian attacks on Kyiv during the night and daytime, according to Ukrainian officials. A separate Russian strike on a passenger train in southern Ukraine also killed a female railway employee.
The attacks came despite an earlier understanding between Russia and Ukraine to refrain from strikes on each other’s capitals for three days, during a period of high-level U.S. diplomatic activity.
U.S. envoys Donald Trump and Jared Kushner had traveled to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend as Washington pursued efforts to advance negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
The strike on We Are Ukraine has heightened concerns over the safety of Ukrainian journalists and media organizations operating under wartime conditions, while Kyiv continues to accuse Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian and critical infrastructure.
