The European Union has received reports from intelligence sources indicating that China supplied Russia with weapons for use in its war against Ukraine. The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, presented compelling evidence to EU member states.
This was reported by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing three sources, as relayed by Ukrinform.
The sources confirmed that the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, briefed EU countries on the relevant intelligence findings ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers scheduled to begin next Monday, urging a response. The evidence was described as “convincing” and indicative of “lethal support,” according to a senior EU diplomat.
“We now need to consider the full range of measures,” the diplomat said. These could include new sanctions, such as banning business with certain Chinese companies, freezing assets, and imposing travel bans, among other actions.
At the end of September, it was reported that a branch of the Russian state arms manufacturer Almaz-Antey, known as Kupol, had developed and tested a new long-range combat drone in China and was seeking to establish large-scale production there to deploy these drones in the war against Ukraine.
If the reports are true, they indicate that China, contrary to its official stance, is supplying Russia with lethal weapons for use in its war against Ukraine, wrote Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
As previously reported, global media outlets have repeatedly published evidence suggesting that China is secretly providing weapons to Russia for its war of aggression in Ukraine. Chinese officials and diplomats have categorically denied these claims.
