The Future of Serbia in the EU, But with Conditions: Von der Leyen and Costa Call for Reforms

Top European Union (EU) officials, Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, announced they held an important meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, where they discussed the need to advance with reforms related to the EU, including decisive steps towards media freedom, anti-corruption efforts, and electoral reform.

Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, wrote in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that Serbia’s future lies within the EU.

“Serbia must undertake reforms related to its path towards the EU, especially decisive steps towards media freedom, the fight against corruption, and electoral reform. Serbia’s future is in the EU,” Von der Leyen stated.

Meanwhile, President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, highlighting the issues discussed in the meeting, emphasized that tangible progress in these areas, from which the Serbian people could directly benefit, is achievable.

“Progress is needed in the areas of media freedom, the fight against corruption, and electoral reform. Tangible achievements in these areas, from which the Serbian people can directly benefit, are attainable,” Costa wrote.
