Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested a possible reduction in tariffs on Chinese products from 145% down to 80%, calling the measure “fair” as part of efforts to ease tensions in the ongoing trade war with China.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized the need for China to further open its markets to the U.S., arguing that closed economies no longer function effectively. He added that the final decision would be made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
This proposal comes ahead of a scheduled meeting in Switzerland, where the possibility of lowering tariffs is expected to be discussed as part of broader de-escalation efforts. In April, Trump imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, leading to a 21% drop in Chinese exports to the U.S. and a 14% decline in American imports from China.
Meanwhile, Chinese exporters are preparing to resume shipments to the U.S., booking cargo space in anticipation of a possible easing of tariffs. However, experts warn that a quick resolution remains unlikely, given the drawn-out nature of past trade conflicts.
