The UK calls for urgent dialogue between Pakistan and India to de-escalate growing tensions, stressing the importance of protecting civilians and maintaining peace in the region.
The United Kingdom has called on Pakistan and India to engage in urgent discussions regarding the rising tensions between the two countries, emphasizing that no one benefits from further escalation. This appeal comes after a series of military exchanges in the Kashmir region, intensifying concerns over the security and stability of the area.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain is “actively engaging with both countries” and urging them to pursue dialogue, de-escalation, and civilian protection. This diplomatic move highlights the UK’s unique relationship with both nations, as it is home to millions of citizens with Indian and Pakistani heritage.
Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, David Lammy, reinforced the UK’s stance, declaring that his government has clearly communicated to both Pakistan and India that any further escalation will lead to dire consequences for all parties involved.
Tensions Escalate in Kashmir
The recent escalation began with Indian Air Force airstrikes on nine Pakistani locations, which resulted in casualties and raised alarms about the potential for a full-scale conflict. These strikes came after 36 deaths in Kashmir last month, which India blamed on Pakistani-backed militants.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs claimed the airstrikes targeted terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan’s borders, a claim that has been disputed by Pakistani authorities. In response, Pakistan asserted that it had successfully downed five Indian military jets and a drone, although India has not confirmed these reports.
India-Pakistan Conflict Background
India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed nations, have a long history of conflict, primarily over the disputed Kashmir region. Since their independence in 1947, the two countries have fought multiple wars and have engaged in several skirmishes. Despite a fragile ceasefire, tensions between the nations have remained high, particularly in Kashmir, a region claimed by both countries.
The UK, due to its historical ties with both nations, plays a significant role in encouraging dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. David Lammy emphasized that a continued conflict in the region would have severe consequences not only for the countries involved but also for global stability.
