Ukraine has accused Russia of violating a ceasefire proposal, saying attacks continued throughout the night despite Kyiv’s call to halt hostilities.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said that more than 100 drones and several missiles were launched in the hours after the ceasefire was supposed to take effect.
“Russian attacks using 108 drones and three missiles continued throughout the night, including morning strikes on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia,” he wrote on Telegram.
Sybiha criticized Moscow for ignoring Ukraine’s initiative and urged international partners to increase pressure on Russia, including through additional sanctions.
Earlier this week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv would observe a ceasefire starting at midnight Tuesday (21:00 GMT), positioning it as a step toward de-escalation.
The move came after Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a temporary halt in fighting to mark Victory Day on May 8–9, commemorating the end of World War II. Putin also invited Ukraine to join the initiative.
Zelenskyy, however, noted that no formal request had been submitted to Kyiv regarding Russia’s proposal, while it remains unclear whether Ukraine formally communicated its own ceasefire terms to Moscow.
The latest developments highlight ongoing mistrust between the two sides and the continued difficulty in securing even short-term pauses in fighting.
