The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced that imported electronic devices will be excluded from President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, Gazeta Sinjali reports.
Smartphones, computer monitors, and various electronic components are among the products exempted. According to the notice, the exemption applies to goods entering the United States or withdrawn from warehouses as of April 5, CNN reports.
The move follows Trump’s decision to impose a minimum tariff of 145% on Chinese imports, a measure that could have significantly impacted tech giants like Apple, which manufactures iPhones and other products in China.
Wedbush Securities estimates that around 90% of Apple’s iPhone production and assembly is based in China. Meanwhile, Counterpoint Research, a firm tracking global smartphone shipments, noted that Apple currently has about six weeks’ worth of inventory in the United States. Once this supply runs out, prices are expected to rise.
