Mitrovica North – During the visit of Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, and acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, to North Mitrovica, an isolated incident occurred involving Stefan Veljković, the leader of the “Serbian Democracy” group, who was briefly detained by the Kosovo Police.

According to official sources, the detention was carried out calmly and in accordance with legal procedures, after Veljković attempted to disrupt the institutional visit through an unauthorized protest.

Nevertheless, Serbian media swiftly launched a disinformation campaign, claiming that Veljković was violently arrested by special units accompanying Minister Sveçla. These claims have not been independently verified and appear to be yet another attempt to portray Kosovo as oppressive toward the local Serbian population.

Footage published by a local Serbian outlet does not show any excessive use of force, while Kosovo authorities emphasized that the presence of security forces was preventative and aimed at maintaining public order during the visit of state officials to a sensitive area.

This is not the first time such an incident has been exploited to construct destabilizing narratives in the Serbian and international public discourse. The Government of Kosovo reiterated its commitment to exercising legal authority across all municipalities, including the Serb-majority north.
