Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Miloš Vučević has said that Serbia has fewer than 100 days until the next elections, claiming that an opposition-backed “blockader” list currently leads in opinion polls but arguing that the ruling party can still overturn the situation.
Speaking about the expected election campaign, Vučević said the political contest would be tough and unpredictable, while accusing opponents of effectively wanting the country to stop functioning during the campaign period.
“Elections will come very soon. Everyone who is a serious political actor is already campaigning,” Vučević said, adding that the state would continue carrying out its responsibilities regardless of the political contest.
He said current polling showed the “blockader” list ahead, but insisted that SNS could still “throw a wrench into their plans.”
“I think the campaign will be fierce and the political contest will be uncertain. According to the polls, the blockader list is leading, but I think our list can upset their calculations,” Vučević said.
He also claimed that the situation had recently shifted in favor of the ruling party and against its opponents.
“We have fewer than 100 days until the elections,” Vučević said, referring to President Aleksandar Vučić’s previous statement that he would accept the election result, congratulate the winner and continue political activity from opposition if his list lost.
Vučević challenged the student-backed opposition movement to make a similar commitment to accepting the election results, arguing that voters had yet to hear such a guarantee from its side.
The comments come as Serbia’s political parties and emerging opposition groups prepare for an increasingly competitive election campaign, with polling and the ability of the student movement to translate its protest support into electoral votes expected to be key factors.
