Former OSCE Verification Mission chief William Walker has once again rejected Serbian claims that the victims of the Reçak Massacre were combatants.
Describing the horrific scenes he witnessed in Reçak on January 16, 1999, Walker said the victims were dressed in civilian village clothing and showed “no sign” of being military personnel.
Among the bodies he saw was a man without a head, while others displayed severe signs of violence and execution-style killings. Walker instructed OSCE verifiers to photograph everything as evidence of the crime.
Survivor testimonies included in the indictment describe Serbian forces shooting civilians, killing family members, and attacking wounded villagers during the operation on January 15, 1999.
According to the Special Prosecution’s indictment, 21 defendants are accused of killing 42 civilians during the massacre.
More than two decades later, Reçak remains one of the clearest symbols of the crimes committed during the war in Kosovo — and a reminder that truth and justice cannot be erased.
