Kosovo today marks the 27th anniversary of its Liberation, one of the most important dates in its modern history, linked to the entry of NATO forces into Kosovo and the withdrawal of Serbian forces following the 1998–1999 war.
On June 12, 1999, NATO forces entered Kosovo after the conclusion of a 78-day air campaign against Serbian targets, paving the way for the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo’s territory.
This significant day for Albanians came after the war led by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) against Serbian forces and following NATO’s intervention to end the conflict.
The 1998–1999 war left more than 10,000 people dead, the majority of them Albanians, while over one million citizens were forced to flee Kosovo. After the end of the conflict, hundreds of thousands of refugees returned to their hometowns, while NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Kosovo continues to this day through KFOR.
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Liberation, Kosovo institutions have organized a series of commemorative activities.
The joint agenda of the caretaker Government and the Presidency begins at 09:00 with tributes at the Adem Jashari Memorial Complex in Prekaz.
