The Islamic Community of Kosovo, under the guidance of its leader, Mufti Naim ef. Tërnava, delivered a unified sermon across mosques in Kosovo today, focusing on the theme “Kosovo’s Independence and Our Religious and National Responsibility.”

The sermon emphasized the approaching holy month of Ramadan as a time for spiritual reflection, moral accountability, and strengthening faith, patience, and social responsibility. Worshippers were reminded that self-discipline, justice, sacrifice, and solidarity are core Islamic values that are closely intertwined with the historical struggles of the Kosovar people.

Reflecting on Kosovo’s Independence

Ahead of February 17, the anniversary of Kosovo’s independence in 2008, the sermon highlighted the decades-long struggle for freedom, including oppression, persecution, imprisonment, massacres, and the Kosovo Liberation War. The Islamic Community underscored that Kosovo’s independence was not granted by chance, but was the result of sustained sacrifice and resistance.

The sermon honored the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and the sacrifices of the Jashari family, led by the legendary commander Adem Jashari, noting their example of resilience, loyalty, and selflessness. Religious leaders stressed that the war was a fight for survival, dignity, and freedom, not revenge, and highlighted that self-defense is permissible in the face of systematic injustice.

Civic Responsibility Today

Religious leaders called on citizens to actively protect and strengthen Kosovo’s institutions, maintain unity and stability, and support the state rather than obstruct it. The sermon emphasized that faith and state governance must work together to safeguard human rights, liberty, and social order.

“Freedom Has a Name” March

In observance of the anniversary, a peaceful march titled “Freedom Has a Name” will take place on February 17 in Prishtina to support former KLA members currently held in The Hague. The Islamic Community encouraged participants to demonstrate unity, responsibility, and dignity, reflecting the moral teachings of Islam while standing against injustice.

Upholding Kosovo’s Legacy

The sermon concluded with a call for citizens to view Kosovo’s independence as a sacred trust from the nation’s martyrs and freedom fighters, urging the protection of this legacy through justice, honesty, and social cohesion. Leaders emphasized that strengthening societal harmony, mutual respect, and interfaith cooperation is essential for a secure, united, and just Kosovo.
