The declaration of independence by Kosovo on February 17, 2008, sparked strong reactions in Serbia. At the time, Serbian leaders issued harsh accusations against the international community, particularly targeting the United States, holding it responsible for the actions of the Kosovo Assembly.
The then-Prime Minister of Serbia, Vojislav Koštunica, described the act as illegal and vowed that Serbia would never recognize the new state. In a press conference, he referred to Kosovo as a “fake state” and warned that the names of the U.S. president and European allies would be “written in black letters in Serbian history” for their role in the independence declaration, according to KosovaPress.
Former Serbian President Boris Tadić also assured his compatriots that Serbia would take all responsible measures to annul the unilateral declaration of independence. He reiterated that “Serbia will never recognize the independence of Kosovo.”
