Former European Parliament rapporteur for Kosovo, Viola von Cramon, has stated via social media (X) that Serbia remains “very far” from joining the European Union, contradicting recent claims about potential EU accession without veto rights.

Von Cramon emphasized that, apart from Belarus and Azerbaijan, no other country is further from EU membership than Serbia..

Before discussing EU accession or any veto options for Serbia, many, many things still need to happen. The country is currently as far from real membership as almost any other, except Belarus and Azerbaijan. I didn’t say they are ‘candidates,’ I just noted that Serbia cannot be much further from EU membership (if we set aside the countries mentioned),” she wrote.

Her comments came as a response to German journalist Michael Martens of FAZ, who reported that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić indicated Serbia might be willing to join the EU even without the right to veto.
