President Vjosa Osmani marked the anniversary of the historic hunger strike by miners at Trepça, which began on February 20, 1989, involving around 1,350 miners protesting against the oppressive policies of the hegemonist Serbian regime.

In her statement, President Osmani emphasized that the miners’ sacrifice shook the foundations of a government that promoted discrimination and inequality.

Barricaded deep within the Stan Tërgut mine for eight consecutive days, they became a symbol of courage and dignity. Through their resistance, the miners fostered solidarity and popular unity across Kosovo. Their sacrifice became a pledge for freedom, demonstrating that the path to liberty is forged by the courage of those who do not surrender,” she wrote.

The commemoration highlights the historic role of the Trepça miners in Kosovo’s struggle for freedom and their enduring legacy as symbols of resilience and unity.
