Retired U.S. Colonel Ray Wojcik has stated that any sudden change in the positioning of American troops within Kosovo Force (KFOR) would be a mistake and could create instability.

Speaking to Radio Free Europe, Wojcik emphasized that if the United States were to reduce its troop contribution, other NATO allies should step in.

“Without any doubt, yes. If the United States reduces its contribution to KFOR, other NATO allies must strengthen their presence to maintain deterrence credibility and operational effectiveness. That presence could be reduced over time, but only if security conditions allow,” he said.

Wojcik stressed that one of the most important conditions that would represent a decisive turning point for the region would be Kosovo’s membership in NATO.

According to him, accession to NATO would significantly enhance long-term security stability in Kosovo and the broader Western Balkans, reinforcing deterrence and reducing the risk of renewed tensions.
