The European Commission has called for full clarity on the steps the United States intends to take following the recent ruling by the US Supreme Court, which struck down tariffs imposed under former President Donald Trump, arguing that he overstepped his authority by implementing them without Congressional approval.

In an official statement, the EU Commission stressed that the current situation does not create favorable conditions for implementing the agreement previously signed between the parties.

“The current situation is not conducive to achieving transatlantic trade and investment that is ‘fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial,’ as agreed by both sides in the EU–US Joint Statement of August 2025,” the statement reads.

The Commission emphasized its commitment to fully protecting EU interests, ensuring that European companies and exporters receive fair treatment, predictability, and legal certainty.

“A deal is a deal. As the United States’ largest trading partner, the EU expects the US to respect the commitments made in the Joint Statement, just as the EU remains faithful to its own obligations,” the statement continued.

The Commission also noted ongoing contact with the US administration. On Saturday, February 21, European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, held talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.

“We will continue working to reduce tariffs, in line with the Joint Statement,” the European Commission concluded.
