The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, reacted after a meeting with Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, regarding the process of electing the country’s next president.
In a Facebook post, Abdixhiku said that the presidential election process is taking place within a limited timeframe, noting that less than nine days remain to reach a solution.
He emphasized that a high level of political responsibility is required during this short period, including clarity, maturity, and willingness to compromise, in order to avoid any risk of institutional instability in Kosovo.
According to Abdixhiku, Lidhja Demokratike e Kosovës believes there are two viable paths forward:
- A broad parliamentary consensus around a joint candidate for president, or
- A political agreement among parliamentary parties.
He stressed that the Presidency must remain an institution that guarantees the separation of powers and serves as a unifying factor for the country, rather than an extension of the governing majority.
Abdixhiku also pointed out that both options require the support of at least two-thirds of the deputies in the Kosovo Assembly. If neither option is achieved, the country could face new elections, which he described as an unnecessary scenario at this time.
He concluded by saying that LDK will approach the process with state responsibility, full transparency, and a willingness to find a solution, prioritizing institutional stability and the interests of the Republic of Kosovo.
