Serbia has not aligned with two new foreign policy decisions adopted by the European Union regarding Iran, making it the only EU candidate country from the Western Balkans that has not done so.
According to the EU, Serbia did not join the decision expanding restrictive measures related to the situation in Iran, which adds additional individuals and entities to the sanctions list. It also failed to align with measures targeting Iran’s military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine and armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region.
Meanwhile, all other Western Balkan EU candidate countries — North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina — aligned with the EU’s decisions, committing to ensure their national policies follow the bloc’s measures.
The EU said it welcomes the commitment of these countries to maintain policy alignment, noting that such coordination is an important part of the accession process.
