Slobodan Cvejić, Vice President of the Serbia Center (SRCE) and former member of the REM Council, has stated that ongoing pressure on TV N1, Nova, Danas, and Radar by the regime directly contradicts the rules and values of the European Union.
According to SRCE, Cvejić emphasized that Serbia Center has used all available contacts to inform partners in EU political parties about Aleksandar Vučić’s plan to prevent independent media from functioning professionally and reporting on corruption and repression against political opponents of the SNS in Serbia.
“It is important that the truth about media pressure reaches every politician, MEP, or member of parliaments in EU countries, as this is the only way for public opinion in that political space—where Serbia is officially a candidate—to react and pressure the majority owner of these media outlets to allow them to continue their professional work,” Cvejić said.
He also noted that while private capital may have its own interests, companies or investment funds risk losing credibility in the EU public if they are seen as supporting a dictator or enabling anti-democratic processes, even for minor business gains with the outgoing Serbian regime.
Cvejić pointed out that the recording of the conversation between Lučić and Miler leaves little doubt in the EU that Aleksandar Vučić is directly involved in media pressure.
He added that the intensified campaign against N1 and Nova in recent days indicates ongoing efforts to interfere with media independence, creating a narrative of alleged illegal action against the state while, according to the regime, preparing for another assassination attempt on the president.
Cvejić concluded by stressing that support from the international community, including gestures like the French ambassador’s visit to N1, is crucial to prevent Serbia from sliding into complete darkness.
