Opposition leader Dragan Đilas has accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić of not wanting Serbia to become a member of the European Union, saying that Vučić’s joint initiative with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama proves this claim.

According to Dragan Đilas, president of the Stranka slobode i pravde, the proposal by Aleksandar Vučić and Edi Rama to seek entry into the Schengen Area and access to the European Union single market—without insisting on full EU membership—confirms what his party has argued for years.

Đilas stated that Vučić is aware that the EU would not accept Serbia in its current state, alleging that the country faces issues such as weak rule of law, corruption, crime, and political instability, while also maintaining close ties with China and Russia.

He argued that Vučić’s concept of the European Union is limited to free travel and the movement of goods, services, workers, and capital, while avoiding deeper reforms tied to EU standards, such as independent judiciary, free media, strong institutions, and strict anti-corruption measures.

According to Đilas, Serbia should continue pursuing full EU membership, emphasizing that the country is part of Europe and that its citizens should not be treated as second-class Europeans.

He concluded that Serbia’s path toward full integration into the EU must remain a national goal, despite political disagreements over how that objective should be achieved.
