Kosovo’s Prime Minister and leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, has informed party members that he will meet tomorrow with the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, to discuss the ongoing process of electing the country’s next president.
According to Kurti, one of the options under discussion is an open political race in which each party would nominate its own candidate for the presidency. He emphasized that if political parties agree on such a framework, Vetëvendosje is prepared to participate under the same model and present its own nominee.
Kurti noted that the future president could come from any political party, signaling the possibility of a broader parliamentary contest rather than a single consensus candidate supported by all major political forces.
The announcement comes after recent talks between Kurti and the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Bedri Hamza, which ended without an agreement on a consensual presidential candidate. Hamza had previously stated that PDK offered what he described as a final opportunity to avoid potential new elections, proposing that the president should come from his party.
Meanwhile, Kurti has reiterated that if a consensus cannot be reached among political parties, the process will move forward with party-backed nominations for the presidency, a scenario that could lead to a competitive vote in the Assembly of Kosovo in the coming days.
