Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that efforts are continuing to successfully conclude the process of electing Kosovo’s next president, ahead of his meeting with the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, as part of ongoing political consultations.
Speaking to the media, Kurti emphasized that the main objective remains securing a candidate who can obtain at least 80 votes in the Assembly, a requirement in the initial rounds of the presidential election process. According to him, discussions with political parties are intensifying as the constitutional deadline approaches.
“We are continuing our efforts to successfully conclude the challenge of electing the president. We need a candidate who can secure 80 votes in the hall. After the meeting with the chairman of the PDK, we are now meeting with the chairman of the LDK, and everything will become clear within just a few days,” Kurti said.
Earlier, the prime minister also met with Bedri Hamza, leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, as part of the same consultation process aimed at reaching political consensus around a potential candidate.
This will be the second meeting between Kurti and Abdixhiku on the issue, following their initial discussion last week as parties attempt to find common ground.
Based on the constitutional timeline, March 4 is the final deadline to elect the president. If the Assembly fails to complete the process by then, the country could head into new extraordinary elections, increasing political pressure on party leaders to reach an agreement in the coming days.
