In the village of Greme, near Ferizaj, stands one of the oldest mosques in Kosovo, known as the “Green Mosque” (Xhamia e Gjelbër).
This religious building carries a history of around 500 years, serving not only as a place of worship but also as an important center for education and resistance during difficult periods in Kosovo’s history.

A mosque that became a school

According to imam Halim Cakolli, the mosque played a crucial role in the years before the Kosovo war. During that time, many Albanian students were forcibly expelled from schools by Serbian authorities, leaving them without access to education.

As a response, the mosque was transformed into a temporary school, allowing students to continue their education despite the restrictions.

Cakolli explained that many generations studied there, thanks to the dedication of villagers and community members who refused to allow the education process to stop.

A refuge during the war

During the Kosovo War, the mosque also became an important point for fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

According to Cakolli, the building served as a center and shelter for KLA soldiers, where people stayed, guarded the area, and organized resistance. Because of its location between the village, the city, and the surrounding mountains, it became a strategic point during the conflict.

He recalled that Serbian forces approached the mosque several times, but encountered resistance and were forced to retreat.

Surviving centuries

Despite the challenges of war and the passage of time, the mosque has survived to this day, although it has undergone restorations due to damage caused over the years.

Cakolli also remembers a personal milestone there. While studying in Cairo, he returned home during a summer break and was asked by the Islamic Community of Kosovo to lead a Friday prayer because the imam at the time was ill.

For him, delivering sermons in such a historic mosque was a special and meaningful experience.

A cultural and historical symbol

Today, the Green Mosque is no longer regularly used, except on special occasions.

However, it remains an important cultural and historical monument, preserving the memories of generations and reflecting the religious, educational, and resistance history of Kosovo.
