President Vjosa Osmani is waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo before signing the decree that would set the date for new parliamentary elections.

Bekim Kupina, the president’s media adviser, said that Osmani had also informed political parties about this during a consultative meeting, which was not attended by Vetëvendosje.

“President Osmani has not yet signed the decree for the election date because, as she informed the parties during the consultative meeting, she is waiting for the Constitutional Court. If the Court considers it necessary to impose a temporary measure, the Presidency welcomes it, reiterating that such a measure would in no way prejudge the Court’s final decision regarding the constitutionality of the decree,” Kupina said.

Last Friday, Osmani issued a decree to dissolve the Assembly of Kosovo, stating that the legislature had failed a day earlier to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline.

The decree was sent today for review to the Constitutional Court by Vetëvendosje, the party of Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The party claims that Osmani’s decision violates the Constitution and “undermines social stability.”

Meanwhile, Albulena Haxhiu stated that the president’s decision represents a “undermining of the work of the Assembly and the institution of the Assembly itself.”
