NATO has clarified that there are currently no significant changes under consideration regarding the possible reduction of U.S. troops in Kosovo.
A NATO official stated that KFOR continues to fulfill its mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 1244, helping to maintain a safe and secure environment for all people in Kosovo, as well as freedom of movement.
NATO emphasized its strong support for the EU-facilitated dialogue.
“The strength and posture of KFOR are reviewed and adjusted periodically as circumstances evolve to ensure the mission remains fit for its purpose. Currently, no significant changes are under consideration. KFOR continues to fulfill its mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 1244, helping maintain a safe and secure environment for all people in Kosovo, as well as freedom of movement. KFOR operates in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) in their respective security roles. The presence and daily activities of KFOR across Kosovo create space for political dialogue. Regional stability ultimately depends on all parties choosing diplomacy over violence. The path to sustainable peace is political. NATO continues to strongly support the EU-facilitated dialogue as a framework for resolving outstanding issues, respecting the rights of all communities,” a NATO official told RTV21.
Furthermore, NATO noted that the United States plays a crucial role in supporting security throughout Kosovo and regional stability.
“The United States continues to play a fundamental role in supporting sustainable security across Kosovo and regional stability, including within the NATO-led KFOR mission. The U.S. has nearly 600 troops deployed within KFOR. They lead the Eastern Regional Command of the mission at Camp Bondsteel. The Eastern Regional Command contributes to KFOR’s daily activities in many ways, including patrols, exercises, engagement with representatives of all local communities, and support for reconstruction and economic development projects,” the NATO official added.
