Kosovo’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Glauk Konjufca, said that the willingness of LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku to hold meetings with Albin Kurti gives hope that the issue of electing a president can be resolved.

Speaking to RTV21, Konjufca said Abdixhiku’s expressed readiness is good news, as it opens perspectives for a possible agreement on the presidency.

“As you have seen, another meeting took place between Prime Minister Kurti and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku. Prime Minister Kurti has also sent a letter to PDK. It will be further specified whether such a meeting can take place. From what I saw, Mr. Abdixhiku’s response was that he is willing for meetings to continue. This is good news because it opens perspectives for the possibility of electing a president,” Konjufca said.

He added that Kosovo has the capacity and political maturity to avoid new elections, noting that the people recently voted only a few months ago and that major changes in public opinion usually occur only after significant transformations.

Konjufca also stated that without opposition parties it is impossible to reach the required quorum of 80 votes, expressing optimism that such support could still be achieved.

“This is something that was not anticipated a few months ago, because Kosovo has never failed to elect a president. Since 2001–2002, we have always managed to do so. This is the first time we have encountered greater complications, because the current political positions have made it difficult to reach agreement on a candidate acceptable to opposition parties. Without the opposition, the quorum of 80 votes cannot be formed. But we are always optimistic that this will happen,” he said.

According to Konjufca, new elections could be avoided, arguing that even if they were held, the result would likely remain the same.

“These elections in December… we are still the same actors, nothing negative has happened that would change public perception significantly. So the result would likely be the same. Then why would new elections be necessary if they can be avoided? We will never give up on negotiations and discussions with other political parties to find a solution that helps our state,” Konjufca stated.
